How to Transfer LinkedIn Ad Account Ownership to a New Agency
Move access to your ad account into your own Business Manager before you remove the old agency's reach.
Is this your situation?
You are replacing your agency and want campaigns and Matched Audiences to stay with you, not leave with them. You want the old agency removed from the ad account before you finish the switch.
The short answer
Claim the ad account that your business owns in your own Business Manager. Removing a partner stops sharing of ad accounts, Pages, Matched Audiences, allow lists, and block lists with that partner.
Before you start
- Confirm who owns the ad account An ad account can be owned by a Business Manager account.Verify: Check whether the account appears under the agency's Business Manager or yours.
- Identify your Business Manager admin You must be a Business Manager admin to add ad accounts to Business Manager.Verify: Check your role in Business Manager settings.
- Check for an existing partnership Both the ad account and the partner must be added in Business Manager before sharing.Verify: Check the Partners page for the agency's Business Manager ID.
How LinkedIn handles this
- No ad accounts or Pages are automatically shared when a partner is added in Business Manager.
- If an ad account has been claimed or added to Business Manager, user access must be managed through Business Manager instead of Campaign Manager.
- Removing a partner from Business Manager stops sharing all ad accounts, LinkedIn Pages, Matched Audiences, allow lists, and block lists with that partner.
- People are not removed from an ad account when the ad account is removed from Business Manager.
Step by step
- Sign in to your Business Manager To claim ad accounts owned by your organization, you must first sign in to Business Manager.Confirm: Check that you are in your own organization's Business Manager.
- Open Ad accounts To claim ad accounts, click Ad accounts in the left menu of Business Manager.Confirm: Check that the Ad accounts list appears.
- Claim ownership by ID To claim ownership of ad accounts by ID, click the Add accounts dropdown and select Claim ownership (ID).Confirm: Check that the pop-up window for entering account IDs opens.
- Enter the account ID When claiming ownership by ID, you enter IDs for ad accounts owned by your business in the pop-up window.Confirm: Check the entered ID against the one from Campaign Manager.
- Submit the claim After entering account IDs, click the Add button.Confirm: Check that a summary of added accounts appears, then click Got it.
- Wait for account manager approval After an ad account has been claimed, account managers on the ad account receive an email notification asking them to approve the Business Manager request.Confirm: Check your email or the agency's for the approval request. If this fails: If the agency ignores the request, raise it through their account manager directly.
- Confirm the account appears in your list Once an ad account is approved, it will appear in the list of accounts on the Ad Accounts page in Business Manager.Confirm: Check the Ad Accounts page for the newly claimed account.
- Remove the old agency as a partner To remove a partner, a Business Manager admin clicks Partners in the left menu.Confirm: Check that the agency no longer appears on the Partners page.
Before you change who is in control
- Removing the partner before stopping sharing Before removing a partner, you need to stop sharing all ad accounts, Pages, and lists. Why it happens: Removal is attempted without checking shared assets first.Already happened: If control has already changed hands — Recover a LinkedIn Account Held by a Former Employee or Agency
- Billing admin still sits with the agency If the billing admin is from the partner's Business Manager, a new billing admin must be assigned first. Why it happens: The billing role was never reassigned.Already happened: If this happened already, recover deactivated access for next steps.
- Sharing stops but accounts remain linked If you or your partner have shared ad accounts, Pages, or audiences, you must contact support to remove the partner. Why it happens: Business Manager keeps the partner while shared assets are active.
