How to Remove Someone's Access to a LinkedIn Account

Remove a former contractor or agency from your ad account or Business Manager without losing billing control.

Is this your situation?

A former contractor or agency still has access to your ad account or Business Manager, and you want them removed. You need the correct role and the right menu path to take that access away.

The short answer

You must have the account manager role to remove another user from an ad account. Removing someone from Business Manager removes them from all ad accounts and Pages associated with that Business Manager.

Before you start

  • Confirm your role You must have the account manager role to remove another user.Verify: Check your assigned role on the ad account.
  • Check for Business Manager A claimed account's access is managed through Business Manager, not Campaign Manager.Verify: Check whether the account appears inside a Business Manager.
  • Add a new billing admin first A new billing admin must be added before the current one is removed.Verify: Check that a second billing admin is in place first.

How LinkedIn handles this

  • When a user is removed from a LinkedIn Ads account, they can no longer take any actions for the account.
  • A user's role can be edited to change their permissions instead of completely removing their access to the ad account.
  • Removing someone from Business Manager removes them from all ad accounts and Pages associated with that Business Manager.
  • When a person is removed from a Page, they still retain access to the Business Manager and any other ad accounts and Pages they have been assigned to.

Step by step

  1. Go to the ad account Go to the ad account in Campaign Manager.Confirm: Check that you are viewing the correct ad account.
  2. Open account settings Click Account settings on the left menu.Confirm: Check that the list of users on the account appears.
  3. Open Manage access Click Manage access.Confirm: Check that the list of users on the account appears.
  4. Select the person to remove Click the Trash icon to the right of the person you would like to remove.Confirm: Check that the Trash icon is next to the correct name.
  5. Confirm the removal Click Remove to confirm.Confirm: Check that the person no longer appears in the access list.If this fails: You click Remove but the person still appears on the access list.
  6. Check for a billing admin conflict Confirm the ad account still has a billing admin before finishing.Confirm: Check the Manage access list for a billing admin entry.
  7. Add a replacement billing admin if needed To remove a billing admin, another billing admin must be added first.Confirm: Check that a new billing admin now appears on the account.
  8. Remove access at the Business Manager level if needed Removing someone from Business Manager removes them from all ad accounts and Pages associated with that Business Manager.Confirm: Check the Business Manager people list for the removed name.
  9. Check the person's role elsewhere A user's role can be edited instead of removed if partial access should remain.Confirm: Check the updated role next to the person's name.

Common mistakes

  • Removing the billing admin directly Ad accounts must have a billing admin at all times. Why it happens: The removal is attempted before a replacement billing admin is in place.Already happened: If access was already lost over this, see LinkedIn Admin Access Change Not Working.
  • Removing from the wrong level A claimed account's access is managed through Business Manager, not Campaign Manager. Why it happens: Access is removed in Campaign Manager without checking where the account is managed.
  • Thinking a Page removal clears everything A person removed from a Page still retains access to the Business Manager and other assigned assets. Why it happens: One removal is mistaken for a full removal across all assets.
  • Lacking the account manager role A user must have the account manager role to remove another user. Why it happens: The attempt is made by someone without that role.

Keeping track of who has access

After you remove someone's access, keep a record of who still holds a role on each account. Delvia is where you track that access over time.
