Instagram Security Checklist

This is the practical run-through behind a secure Instagram account. Work top to bottom in one sitting — it takes most accounts under half an hour — and you will have closed the doors that cause almost every avoidable loss.

Work through every item

• Turn on two-factor authentication: Settings → Accounts Centre → Password and security → Two-factor authentication. Choose an authenticator app where possible.
• Save your backup codes somewhere only you can reach in case you lose the authenticator.
• Add or confirm trusted recovery contacts and check that your recovery email and phone number are current and yours.
• Open Login activity and end any session, device, or location you do not recognise.
• Confirm the account is a Professional account connected to a Business Portfolio your business owns.
• In Meta Business Suite, list everyone with access and remove anyone who no longer needs it.
• Make sure at least two people have Admin on the Business Portfolio, so a single departure cannot lock you out.
• Stop using a shared password: invite teammates as roles instead, then change the password.

Easy items to skip — and why not to

• Skipping the backup codes

  If you lose the phone running your authenticator and have no backup codes, two-factor authentication can lock you out of your own account.

• Only adding one admin

  A single admin is a single point of failure. Keep at least two so the account survives a resignation, a lost phone, or a bus.
