How to Change a Collaborator's Role on Twitch

Change what a collaborator can do by editing their role in the Roles Manager, not by removing and re-adding them.

Is this your situation?

A collaborator already has a role on your channel, and you want to change what they can do. This page covers editing an existing role assignment, not inviting someone for the first time.

The short answer

Locate the individual in the list, click the button next to their name, and check the box next to the role to add. To remove a role instead, click the button next to that role to remove it from the individual.

Before you start

  • Confirm who can make the change Only the channel owner can add or remove Lead Moderator, Editor, and Artist roles.Verify: Check that you are signed in as the channel owner.
  • Find the collaborator in the list The Roles Manager shows a list of individuals who currently have a role on the channel.Verify: Search for their name in the Roles Manager.
  • Check for a role conflict A user can only be either a VIP or a moderator, not both at the same time.Verify: Check their current role before adding a new one.

How Twitch handles this

  • To assign a role, search for the individual, check the role from the drop down, and click Save.
  • Only the channel owner can add or remove the Lead Moderator, Editor, and Artist roles.
  • Chat commands can be used to add or remove moderators and VIPs.
  • It is possible for a user to be a VIP, an editor, and an artist at the same time.

Step by step

  1. Open the Creator Dashboard To manage the roles of community members, go to your Creator Dashboard.Confirm: Check that the dashboard has loaded for your channel.
  2. Open the Roles Manager Click Community in the Creator Dashboard menu, then click Roles Manager.Confirm: Check that a list of individuals with roles appears.
  3. Locate the collaborator A list of individuals already assigned to roles on the channel populates in the Roles Manager.Confirm: Check the list for the name you want to change.
  4. Add a role Click the button next to their name and check the box next to the role to add.Confirm: Check the list for the name and the role you selected.
  5. Remove a role if needed Click the button next to the role to remove it from the individual.Confirm: Check the list next to their name for the role you removed.
  6. Save the change Search for the individual, check the role from the drop down, and click the Save button.Confirm: Check the Roles Manager list for the updated entry.
  7. Wait for Business Manager acceptance if relevant If the role added was Business Manager, that person must accept before gaining enhanced access.Confirm: Check with the collaborator about whether they can open the Business Manager pages.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to assign VIP and moderator together A user can only be either a VIP or a moderator, not both at the same time. Why it happens: You expect both badges to apply at once and do not see the second one take effect.
  • Trying to edit Lead Moderator, Editor, or Artist without owner access Only the channel owner can add or remove the Lead Moderator, Editor, and Artist roles. Why it happens: You click the role button but see no option to change it.
  • Business Manager role appears added but access does not work The Business Manager must accept before being granted enhanced access to the channel. Why it happens: You see the role listed and assume the collaborator can already use it.Already happened: You added the role and the collaborator still cannot open the Business Manager pages.

Keeping track of who has access

After you have changed a collaborator's role, write down who holds which role and when it changed. Delvia is where you track who has access to your channel over time.
