How to give someone access to your Instagram account
Give trusted people access to your Instagram account without handing over your password.
Is this your situation?
You want someone to post, boost or manage your Instagram account. You want to do this without giving them your login, and you want to know who has access to your Instagram later.
The short answer
Shared access lets you invite trusted people to access your Instagram account. Shared access may not be available to everyone.
Before you start
- Confirm shared access is available on your account. Shared access is only available to eligible Instagram accounts.Verify: Check whether shared access appears in your settings.
- Check the account is not a teen account. Shared access is not available to teen accounts.Verify: Check the account's age setting.
- Decide who you trust with access. Shared access allows an account owner to invite people they trust to access their Instagram account.Verify: Check the person's identity before sending an invite.
How Instagram handles this
- People given shared access act on the account with the owner's consent, but not as the owner.
- Instagram encourages account owners to set expectations with people they share access with outside Instagram.
- You can see and download any activity taken by someone you've shared access with.
- If you block someone you've shared access with, that person automatically loses access.
Step by step
- Open notifications to find the shared access flow. Shared access lets an account owner invite people they trust to access their account.Confirm: Check that the invite shows the correct account name.
- Send the invite. Shared access lets an account owner invite people they trust to access their account.Confirm: Check the recipient's name appears in the pending invite list.
- Wait for the invite to be accepted or declined. Once an invitation is accepted, declined, or allowed to expire, the person who sent the invite receives a notification.Confirm: Check notifications for the response.
- Know the invite expiry. A shared access invitation expires after 7 days.Confirm: Check the invite status before the 7 days pass.If this fails: You still want the person to have access after the invite expired.
- Set who can invite you. You can choose who can invite you to share an account.Confirm: Check the invite permission setting reflects your choice.
- Turn off invites entirely if wanted. You can choose to not allow invites to share an account altogether.Confirm: Check the setting shows invites disabled.
- Remove access at any time. Anyone who accepts an invite to share access can be removed from the account at any time.Confirm: Check the person no longer appears in the shared access list.
Common mistakes
- Assuming shared access gives content access. A person with shared access does not have access to the content itself. Why it happens: Owners assume shared access covers everything on the account.
- Blocking someone with shared access and expecting nothing to change. If you block someone you've shared access with, that person automatically loses access. Why it happens: Owners forget blocking also revokes access.
- Assuming a removed collaborator keeps access. Anyone who accepts an invite to share access can be removed from the account at any time. Why it happens: Owners assume shared access is permanent once granted.Already happened: If access was not properly removed, review who has access to your Instagram.
