Discord Server Ownership Given to a Bot or the Wrong Account
Fix an ownership transfer sent to the wrong account before the original owner's access changes further.
Is this your situation?
You transferred server ownership and the new owner is a bot or the wrong account. You want to know who can act on the server now and how to put ownership back where it belongs.
The short answer
Discord's Support team cannot transfer a server back once the transfer is complete. The previous owner stays a member of the server, with access limited to their new role's permissions.
Before you start
- Check who the server lists as owner now On desktop/browser, select the server, then press the Members tab to begin transferring ownership.Verify: Confirm the account or bot shown as owner.
- Check your own role's permissions Your access now depends on the permissions tied to your new role.Verify: Review what your current role allows you to do.
- Check if the new owner can transfer back A server owner can transfer ownership to another server member.Verify: Confirm whether the new owner account can take this action.
How Discord handles this
- A server owner can transfer ownership of a server to another server member.
- After completing the ownership transfer, the previous owner will still be a member of the server.
- The access the previous owner retains depends on the permissions tied to their new role.
- Once a server has been transferred, Discord's Support team is not able to transfer it back.
Step by step
- Check who holds ownership Select the server, then press the Members tab.Confirm: Check the Members tab for the account marked as owner.

- Enter your MFA code if asked If you have MFA enabled on your account, you will be requested to enter your MFA code during the ownership transfer.Confirm: Check for an MFA code prompt on screen.
- Confirm your remaining access After completing the ownership transfer, you will still be a member of the server.Confirm: Check your role and permissions in Server Settings.
- Review what access remains The access you retain after the transfer depends on the permissions tied to your new role.Confirm: Check the Permissions list attached to your new role.
- Know that Support cannot undo it Once a server has been transferred, Discord's Support team is not able to transfer it back.Confirm: Check with the new owner directly if a reversal is needed.
Before you change who is in control
- Assuming Support can reverse it Once a server has been transferred, Discord's Support team is not able to transfer it back. Why it happens: The transfer is treated as final once completed.Already happened: If control has already changed hands — Reclaim a Discord Server Owned by a Former Team Member
- Assuming your old role still gives full control The access the previous owner retains depends on the permissions tied to their new role. Why it happens: Ownership and role permissions are separate things.Already happened: If control already feels lost, see recovering a stolen server.
- Assuming the previous owner left the server After completing the ownership transfer, the previous owner will still be a member of the server. Why it happens: You expect the old owner to disappear once someone else is in charge.
