How to Transfer Server Ownership on Discord

Hand off your server to another member in a few taps, on desktop or mobile.

Is this your situation?

You own a Discord server and want another member to take over as owner. You want to do this through the members list without losing your own access to the server.

The short answer

A server owner can transfer ownership of a Discord server to another server member. After the transfer, you stay a member of the server, though your access then depends on your new role.

Before you start

  • Pick the new owner Decide which server member will become the new owner.Verify: Check that the member appears in your Members tab.
  • Confirm your MFA setup If you have MFA enabled, you will be asked for your MFA code during the transfer.Verify: Check that you have your authenticator or backup codes ready.
  • Know it cannot be reversed by Support Once a server has been transferred, Discord's Support team is not able to transfer it back.Verify: Check that you are certain about the new owner before confirming.

How Discord handles this

  • On desktop/browser, right-click the member in the Members tab and press Transfer Ownership.
  • On mobile, tap the member in the members list and select Transfer Ownership.
  • A confirmation window or screen appears before the transfer completes.
  • After completing the transfer, the previous owner will still be a member of the server.

Before you change who is in control

  • Assuming Support can undo it Once a server has been transferred, Discord's Support team is not able to transfer it back. Why it happens: Owners assume a support ticket can restore the previous arrangement.Already happened: If control has already changed hands — Reclaim a Discord Server Owned by a Former Team Member
  • Expecting to keep full access The access you retain after the transfer depends on the permissions tied to your new role. Why it happens: Staying a member of the server feels like staying in control.Already happened: If this happened, review owner vs admin to see what your new role allows.
  • Picking the wrong member by mistake A server owner can transfer ownership of a Discord server to another server member. Why it happens: Similar display names in the members list make the wrong entry simple to confuse.
