Page Ownership vs Page Access
Owning a Page and having access to it are not the same thing, and mixing them up is how control gets lost.
Is this your situation?
You want to know who actually controls your Facebook Page, not who can post on it. You are trying to work out whether removing someone's access also removes their ownership.
What it is
You want to know who can act as a Page and who legally owns it. There are three types of Facebook Page access: Page access, task access and Community Manager access. When a Page is added to a business portfolio, the business owns that Page. A business portfolio allows organizations to manage the access and permissions of people who work on business assets. Removing someone's access to a Page does not remove them from the business portfolio.
How Facebook handles this
- A person with full control of a Facebook Page can add someone's Page access at any time.
- At least one person must have full control of a Page in a business portfolio for it to stay active.
- If no one has full control, the Page is automatically deactivated and scheduled for deletion.
- A Facebook Page cannot be transferred in ownership to another business portfolio.
- If a Facebook Page is removed from a business portfolio, another organization can add it to their own business portfolio.
Side by side
| Aspect | Page access | Page ownership |
|---|---|---|
| What it controls | Can be given access to manage content, community activity, messages and calls, ads, insights, and leads. | The business owns the Page when it's added to a business portfolio. |
| Who can change it | A person with full control of the Page. | You must have full control of the business portfolio before adding a Page to it. |
| Can it transfer? | Access can be given, edited or removed. | Ownership cannot transfer between portfolios. |
| Effect of removal | Removed person can no longer access the Page. | Removing access does not remove someone from the portfolio. |
| Who really owns it | See who really owns a Facebook Page for more detail. | The business that the portfolio belongs to owns the Page. |
Common mistakes
- Assuming removing access removes ownership ties Removing someone's access to a Page does not remove them from the business portfolio. Why it happens: Access to an asset is confused with portfolio membership.Already happened: If unsure who owns your Page, check who really owns a Facebook Page. Get Full Control of a Facebook Business Portfolio
- Expecting ownership to move with a transfer request A Facebook Page cannot be transferred in ownership to another business portfolio. Why it happens: Ownership is assumed to move like access does.
- Letting a Page go inactive with no full control holder If no one has full control, the Page is automatically deactivated and scheduled for deletion. Why it happens: The last full-control holder is removed without anyone noticing.
If this changes who is in control
When access and ownership are confused, control of the Page can shift without anyone deciding it should. Review who holds full control and who owns the portfolio with the governance companion.
