Which Meta assets can you transfer, and which can't?
Pages, ad accounts, and portfolios move between people in different ways, and some assets never move at all.
Is this your situation?
You want to hand a Page, ad account, or Instagram account to someone else and are not sure which ones actually change hands. You are checking whether an asset can move to another business portfolio before you try.
What it is
A business portfolio brings together Facebook Pages, Instagram accounts and other business assets so they can be managed in one place. A Facebook Page cannot be transferred in ownership to another business portfolio. An ad account created in a business portfolio can't be deleted or transferred from the portfolio. An ad account permanently moved into a business portfolio can't be deleted or transferred to another portfolio. A business asset can only belong to 1 business portfolio at a time.
How Facebook handles this
- A removed Page can be added to a different organization's business portfolio afterward.
- An ad account already in another business portfolio can't be added to yours.
- If an ad account is in another portfolio, you can request access instead of adding it.
- Each Facebook Page can only be in 1 business portfolio.
- Each ad account can only be in 1 business portfolio.
Side by side
| Asset | Can it transfer? | What happens instead |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Page | Cannot be transferred in ownership to another business portfolio. | It can be removed, then added to another organization's business portfolio. |
| Ad account (created in portfolio) | Permanently part of that portfolio. | Can't be deleted or transferred from the portfolio. |
| Ad account (already in another portfolio) | Can't be added to your portfolio. | You can request access to that ad account instead. |
| Any business asset | Can only belong to 1 business portfolio. | You want to know which portfolio it is in. |
Common mistakes
- Expecting a Page to move like a file A Facebook Page cannot be transferred in ownership to another business portfolio. Why it happens: You expect ownership to pass between portfolios the way a file moves between folders.Already happened: If access may already be lost — Get Full Control of a Facebook Business Portfolio
- Assuming a created ad account can be moved later An ad account created in a business portfolio can't be deleted or transferred from the portfolio. Why it happens: You assume permanence applies only after some period of use, not from creation.
- Confusing portfolio permissions for asset ownership A business asset can only belong to 1 business portfolio. Why it happens: You see shared access and read it as a change of ownership.
If this changes who is in control
You expected a Page or ad account to move, and it stayed where it was. If that leaves you unsure who holds control, review auditing who has access.
