Recover Discord Server Ownership After the Owner Goes Missing

When the owner stops responding, Discord has a defined request process, not an automatic transfer.

Is this your situation?

The server owner left or stopped responding, and you want ownership moved to you. You are checking whether your server qualifies for Discord's ownership transfer request.

Do this first

Discord cannot transfer server ownership if the requestor is asking on behalf of another user. One criterion for a server ownership transfer request is that the server has 100 members based on active user count. If the request does not meet the criteria, the Support team will deny it with no exceptions.

Which situation is yours?

  • Owner inactive a month or more, server has 100 members by active user count
  • You have administrator or moderator permissions within the server
  • The server you want transferred is not monetized
  • You are requesting on your own behalf, not for someone else
  • Server is Partnered or Verified, so the current owner must submit it
  • You are unsure if the owner is banned or inactive
  • Multiple servers need new owners, requiring a separate ticket for each

How Discord handles this

  • A server member can request ownership transfer when a server owner steps away or becomes inactive.
  • If a server owner is inactive and not banned, Discord contacts them to get their consent for the server ownership transfer.
  • The current server owner has 7 days to respond to Discord's inquiry about the ownership transfer.
  • If the current owner approves the transfer or does not respond within 7 days, Discord transfers the server if eligible per the requirements.
  • The Support team can only assist with server ownership transfers if the request meets all the criteria.

Which recovery path is yours?

  1. Has the current server owner not accessed their account for at least a month? If so, continue checking the remaining criteria for a server ownership transfer request before submitting one.
  2. Have you, the requestor, been active on your account in the last 30 days? This is one criterion for a server ownership transfer request.
  3. Is the server you want transferred monetized? A monetized server does not meet the criteria for a server ownership transfer request.
  4. Does the server carry a Partnered or Verified badge next to its name? If so, the current owner of that Partnered or Verified server must submit the request themselves, not you.
  5. You are unsure whether the owner is banned. If the owner is inactive and not banned, Discord contacts them to get their consent for the transfer.

What not to do

  • You consider filing the ticket for someone else Discord cannot transfer server ownership if the requestor is asking on behalf of another user. Why it happens: Teammates assume anyone can file the ticket for the intended new owner.
  • You assume Community status counts as Partnered or Verified Having the Community feature enabled does not mean a server is Partnered or Verified. Why it happens: Choosing incorrectly on this field can delay the request's processing.
  • You try to cover several servers in one ticket Support can only handle one server per ownership transfer request. Why it happens: A separate ticket is required for each server.
  • You leave required identifiers out of the ticket Without the required information, support cannot proceed with reviewing the request. Why it happens: Invalid information in the request may delay it and require follow-up.

What to have ready

  • Server Name Required for the request. Have the exact server name ready.
  • Server ID Required for the request. Right-click the server icon and select Copy Server ID.
  • Developer Mode Needed to copy Server and User IDs. Enable Developer Mode in app settings.
  • Inactive owner's username Required for the request. Confirm the owner's exact Discord username.
  • Inactive owner's User ID Required for the request. Right-click their avatar and select Copy User ID.
  • New owner's username Required for the request. Confirm the intended new owner's exact username.
  • New owner's User ID Required for the request. Copy the new owner's User ID the same way.

Stop this happening again

You want ownership settled before an owner's absence forces a request process. Set up a backup owner so ownership does not depend on one person's continued presence.

Keeping track of who has access

An owner going missing without a plan is a preventable gap, not an inevitable one. Delvia keeps a record of who holds ownership and admin roles across your servers, before the gap opens. That record is what turns a missing owner into a routine handoff instead of a support ticket.
