How to Create or Delete a Webhook for a Discord Channel

Create a webhook to post automated messages into a channel, or remove one you no longer need.

Is this your situation?

You want a channel to receive automated messages from another service, or you want to stop one that already does. You make a webhook, or find the one you want gone, in the server's Integrations tab.

The short answer

To make a webhook, open Server Settings and go to the Integrations tab. Webhooks allow automated messages and data updates to be sent to a specific text channel in a server.

Before you start

  • Confirm the target channel Know which text channel should receive the automated messages.Verify: Check that the channel appears in the server's text channel list.
  • Have the other service ready Webhooks require another website to use.Verify: Check that the other service has a field for a webhook URL.
  • Check service compatibility Twitch and YouTube can't really use webhooks.Verify: Check the service's own documentation for webhook support.
  • Plan a name for the webhook A webhook can be named to distinguish multiple webhooks for multiple services.Verify: Check the Integrations tab for existing webhook names.

How Discord handles this

  • Discord's built-in webhooks get automated messages and data updates sent to a text channel in a server.
  • Webhooks cannot function on their own and need to be linked to another website to work.
  • Programming-inclined users can create their own service to send webhook messages.
  • GitHub can use webhooks.

Step by step

  1. Open Integrations Open Server Settings and go to the Integrations tab.Confirm: Check the Integrations tab for the webhooks section.
  2. Create the webhook Click the Create Webhook button.Confirm: Check for a new webhook entry in the list.
  3. Name the webhook Name the webhook to distinguish it from other webhooks for other services.Confirm: Check the Name field for the entered name.
  4. Set the avatar Edit the webhook's avatar by clicking the avatar next to the Name in the top left.Confirm: Check the avatar next to the Name field.
  5. Choose the channel Choose the channel the webhook posts to by selecting the desired text channel in a dropdown menu.Confirm: Check the dropdown for the selected channel name.
  6. Copy the URL Obtain the webhook URL for the server and channel by pressing the Copy Webhook URL button.Confirm: Check that the URL has been copied to your clipboard.
  7. Paste into the other service Webhooks require another website to use, so paste the URL into that service's configuration.Confirm: Check the other service for a saved webhook URL field.
  8. Delete when no longer needed Return to Server Settings, go to the Integrations tab, and remove the webhook entry.Confirm: Check the Integrations tab to confirm the entry is gone.

Common mistakes

  • Picking an incompatible service Twitch and YouTube can't really use webhooks. Why it happens: The service is assumed to accept a webhook URL when it does not.
  • Expecting Facebook support Facebook can't really use webhooks. Why it happens: The reader assumes webhook support is universal across platforms.
  • Losing track of a webhook You created a webhook and can no longer find it to remove. Why it happens: You never gave the webhook a name you would recognize later.Already happened: See webhook keeps posting and can't be found.
  • Missing the /github suffix To make the webhook display messages properly in GitHub, '/github' must be appended to the end of the webhook URL.Why it happens: The URL is copied directly without the required suffix added.

Keeping track of who has access

After you have set up or removed a webhook, keep track of which channels still receive automated messages. Delvia is where you track that, alongside the rest of who has access.
