How Server Ownership Works on Discord

Ownership on Discord is a single, transferable role, separate from any custom name or badge your server shows.

Is this your situation?

You see a crown icon, an Owner role, and a member you expect to be in charge, and they do not match. This page explains what ownership actually is so you can tell the real owner from a role that only looks like it.

What it is

A server owner can transfer ownership of a Discord server to another server member. After an ownership transfer, the access the previous owner retains depends on the permissions tied to their new role. Server member can request ownership transfer when a server owner steps away or becomes inactive, under Discord's own criteria. If a server is Partnered or Verified, it will have a corresponding badge next to the server's name. Having the Community Feature enabled on a server does not mean that the server is Partnered or Verified.

How Discord handles this

  • Ownership is one role: a server owner can transfer it to another member.
  • After a transfer, the previous owner stays a member of the server.
  • What that previous owner can still do depends on the permissions of their new role, not on history.
  • A Partnered or Verified badge next to the name is separate from who owns the server.
  • The Discord Admins server requires Manage Server, not ownership, to join.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a badge means a new owner A Partnered or Verified badge sits by the server name but does not indicate ownership. Why it happens: The badge and the Owner role both sit near the server name.Already happened: If access may already be lost — Recover Admin Access to a Discord Server After the Owner Disappears
  • Expecting a former owner to lose all access A previous owner remains a member of the server after transfer. Why it happens: Transfer changes the role, not membership.Already happened: If access looks wrong, see transferring ownership versus keeping admins in control.
  • Confusing Community Feature with ownership eligibility Having Community Feature enabled does not mean a server is Partnered or Verified. Why it happens: Both are server settings toggles readers assume signal the same status.

If this changes who is in control

Ownership that no longer matches who runs the server day to day is a control gap, not a display issue. Review owner versus admin roles to see who should hold the Owner role going forward.

Frequently asked questions

Does the crown icon always match the real owner?

The crown marks whoever currently holds the Owner role, which can be transferred to another member.

Does a Partnered or Verified badge mean ownership changed?

No, that badge is separate from who owns the server.

Will a former owner lose server access after a transfer?

The previous owner stays a member, and their access depends on the permissions of their new role.

Can someone request ownership if the owner disappears?

A member can request a transfer when the owner steps away or becomes inactive.

Keeping track of who has access

Confusion about who holds ownership builds quietly when a crown, a role name, and a badge are read as the same signal. Delvia keeps a clear record of who actually holds ownership so the people managing a server are not guessing from icons.
