Resolving YouTube Channel Ownership Disputes
When more than one person claims ownership of a YouTube channel, the fastest path back to control is the one that does not make the dispute worse.
Is this your situation?
You and someone else both believe you should control a YouTube channel, and channel ownership is already changing. You want to know what to do before either side loses the Brand Account entirely.
Do this first
Stop making role or permission changes to the channel. Confirm who currently holds the owner role before anyone else is added or removed. Do not attempt an ownership transfer while the dispute is unresolved.
Which situation is yours?
- Two people both claim primary owner of a Brand Account.
- A manager changed roles without the owner's agreement.
- Someone was removed and disputes it.
- An agency or former partner holds owner access.
- Primary owner transfer is stuck on the 7-day wait.
- You cannot find your name in the permissions list.
How YouTube handles this
- A Brand Account must have one primary owner.
- Owners can take the most actions and control who manages the account.
- The Owner role cannot transfer ownership to other users.
- To assign yourself as primary owner, you must have been an owner for 7 days or more.
- If you can't find your name in the permissions list, another owner must add you.
Which recovery path is yours?
- Are you currently listed as an owner or manager on the account? Check the Brand Account permissions list for your name before taking any other step.
- Has 7 days passed since you became an owner? If not, you will get an error message when trying to become primary owner.
- Is the other party a manager, not an owner? Managers will not have the option to change the primary owner role on a Brand Account.
- Has someone already been removed and disputes it? If you can't find your name in the permissions list, you must be added as an owner by another channel owner.
What not to do
- Trying to transfer ownership mid-dispute The Owner role cannot transfer ownership to other users. Why it happens: Disputing parties try to force a resolution through a transfer that the role does not support.
- Assuming 7 days has passed when it has not To assign yourself as primary owner of a Brand Account, you must have been an owner for 7 days or more. Why it happens: The error message appears only after the attempt is made.Already happened: If you already got the error, wait out the remaining days before trying again.
- Removing a disputed party before checking the list If you can't find your name in the permissions list, you must be added as an owner by another channel owner. Why it happens: Removal is treated as final without confirming who else holds owner access.
What to have ready
- Current permissions list Who is listed as owner, manager, or editor. Check the Brand Account permissions list for current roles.
- Your own role tenure How long you have held the owner role. Count days since you were added as owner.
- Primary owner identity Who holds the single primary owner slot. Check which name shows as primary owner.
- Recent role changes Any changes made without your agreement. Review the list for roles that changed recently.
- Removal history Whether anyone was removed and disputes it. Check whether a disputed name is missing from the list.
- Account used to sign in Whether you are signed into the correct Google Account. Confirm the Google Account you are signed into.
Stop this happening again
Disputes like this are harder to resolve when only one person has ever held owner access. Add a second owner before a disagreement starts, as explained in how to add a backup owner.

Keeping track of who has access
Ownership disputes are preventable when more than one person's role on a channel is visible before a disagreement starts. Delvia keeps a record of who holds which role, so a dispute is not the first moment that record gets checked. Reviewing roles before conflict arises is a smaller task than resolving a dispute after it starts.
