Troubleshooting

You lost the phone with your Instagram on it

You lost or replaced the phone that had Instagram — and your two-factor codes — on it. Here is how to recover access from a new device when the old one is gone.

Losing the phone is only a real lockout if that phone also held your two-factor method and you have no backup. The good news: your account does not live on the device, so as long as you can still reach the email or use a linked Facebook account, you can recover from a new phone. Start by working out what the lost phone actually held.

Quick summary

You want into Instagram from a new device. This is straightforward if you can still reach your email or a linked Facebook account, and harder only if the lost phone also held your two-factor with no backup.

Most common causes

  • The lost phone had your authenticator app
  • Your two-factor was tied to that phone's number
  • You were only ever logged in on that one device
  • You never set a recovery email or linked Facebook account

Quick checks

  • Install Instagram on the new device and try "Get help logging in"
  • Check whether you can log in with a linked Facebook account
  • Confirm the email on the account is one you can still open

Recover on a new device

  1. Install Instagram and reset from the new phone

Install the app, tap "Get help logging in", and request a reset using your username, email, or phone. If the email still reaches you, this is usually enough.

Where: New device → Instagram app

Confirm: A reset link or code arrives at an inbox you can open.

  2. Log in with a linked Facebook account

If your Instagram is linked to Facebook through Accounts Center, choose "Log in with Facebook" on the new device — this can bypass the lost-phone problem entirely.

Confirm: You reach your account without needing the old phone.

  3. Handle the two-factor step

If two-factor prompts you, use a saved backup code or the SMS option if the number still works. If the lost phone was the only second factor, move to recovery.

If this fails: Two-factor is locking you out

Frequently asked questions

Not by itself — your account is not stored on the device. The problem only arises if that phone also held your two-factor method and you have no backup.

Access issues are easier to prevent when roles, owners, and responsibilities are recorded clearly

Most access problems trace back to the same gap — no clear record of who has access, what role they hold, and what should happen when that changes. Delvia helps you keep that record so problems are visible before they become incidents.

Delvia is free on iPhone and Android. Keep a clear record of who has access to your accounts — and what to do when that changes — wherever you are.
