How to switch to an Instagram professional account
A professional account unlocks business tools, insights, and access sharing. Here is how to switch to a Creator or Business account and what changes when you do.
Switching to a professional account is the gateway to almost everything in this hub: insights, ads, and the ability to delegate access through Meta Business Suite. It is free and instant, and you can switch back later. You choose between Creator (built for individuals) and Business (built for brands and stores) — and you can change between them afterwards.
If your situation is actually …
- You want to compare the two professional types → Creator vs business account →
- You plan to give a team access next → Give someone access to your Instagram →
Before you start
Access to your Instagram account
The switch happens in your own account settings.
A sense of which type fits
Creator for individuals and public figures; Business for brands, stores, and Shopping.
Switch to a professional account
Open account type settings
Go to Settings and find the account type and tools option.
Where: Instagram app → Settings → Account type and tools
Choose to switch to professional
Select "Switch to professional account" and follow the prompts.
Pick a category and type
Choose a category, then select Creator or Business depending on your needs.
Confirm: Your profile now shows professional tools like Insights and Promotions.
Add the account to your portfolio
To delegate access later, add the now-professional account to a Meta Business Portfolio.
Where: Meta Business settings → Accounts → Instagram accounts
If this fails: Instagram not showing in Business Suite
Switching mistakes
Picking Business when Creator fits better (or vice versa)
They differ in features like Shopping vs the Creator Marketplace. You can switch between them, but choosing right saves friction.
Already happened: Creator vs business account
Switching but never adding the account to a portfolio
Professional status alone does not enable delegation — you still add the account to a Business Portfolio to assign people.

Access issues are easier to prevent when roles, owners, and responsibilities are recorded clearly
Most access problems trace back to the same gap — no clear record of who has access, what role they hold, and what should happen when that changes. Delvia helps you keep that record so problems are visible before they become incidents.
