How to Recover Instagram After a Lost Authenticator or Device

Two-factor is meant to keep others out — but when you lose your authenticator or phone, it locks you out too. Backup codes, a linked Facebook account, or trusted contacts get you back in.

If two-factor is on and you have lost the authenticator app or the phone that received codes, the login screen will ask for a code you cannot produce. You are not stuck: Instagram offers several fallbacks at the code prompt — a saved backup code, a linked Facebook account, or trusted-contact verification — and once you are in, you reset two-factor so this cannot recur.

If your situation is actually …

Getting back in past two-factor

Stage 1 · Stabilize

Find a fallback before retrying endlessly

  1. Look for saved backup codes first — they bypass the authenticator entirely.
A backup code is the fastest, most reliable way in.
  2. Check whether you have a still-logged-in session on another device.
An active session lets you change two-factor without a code.
Stage 2 · Diagnose

Use the "need help" path at the code prompt

  1. At the two-factor prompt, tap the option to get help or try another way.
    Where: instagram.com/accounts/login → two-factor prompt → need help / try another way
  2. See which fallbacks Instagram offers you — backup code, linked Facebook account, or identity verification.
Stage 3 · Reclaim

Verify your way in

  1. Use a linked Facebook account in Accounts Center to log in, if you have one connected.
    Where: Accounts Center login
  2. If no other method works, complete identity verification, which may include a video selfie.
See the video selfie guide if you are prompted for one.
    Where: Account recovery flow
Stage 4 · Harden

Reset two-factor properly

  1. Add the account to your new authenticator app and generate a fresh set of backup codes.
Where: Instagram app → Settings → Accounts Center → Password and security → Two-factor authentication
  2. Store the new backup codes somewhere durable and offline.
This is what turns the next lost phone into a non-event.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. Use the "need help" path at the code prompt and complete identity verification, which may include a video selfie. It is slower and not guaranteed, but it is a real route back in.

Delvia

Access issues are easier to prevent when roles, owners, and responsibilities are recorded clearly

Most access problems trace back to the same gap — no clear record of who has access, what role they hold, and what should happen when that changes. Delvia helps you keep that record so problems are visible before they become incidents.

Delvia is free on iPhone and Android. Keep a clear record of who has access to your accounts — and what to do when that changes — wherever you are.
