How to Memorialize an Instagram Account

Memorializing an account preserves it as a place to remember someone. Here is the request, the proof of death you need, and what changes once the account is memorialized.

Memorialization turns a profile into a remembrance: it stays visible to the people who could already see it, but it is frozen — nobody logs in, and likes, followers, tags, posts, and comments cannot be changed. You request it through Instagram’s deceased-account form with proof of death.

Request memorialization

  1. Gather proof of death

Have a link to an obituary or a news article ready. Instagram requires evidence before it will memorialize a profile.

  2. Open the deceased-account request form

Go to Instagram’s Help Center and find "Report a deceased person’s profile". You do not need to log into the account to submit this.

    Where: help.instagram.com — Report a deceased person’s profile

  3. Choose memorialize and submit the details

Provide the account’s username, the person’s name, and your proof of death, then submit the request.

Confirm: You receive a confirmation that the request was submitted; review takes time and Instagram contacts you if it needs more.

Frequently asked questions

No. Anyone can request memorialization with valid proof of death. Only removal of the account requires verified immediate family or lawful authority over the estate.

Access issues are easier to prevent when roles, owners, and responsibilities are recorded clearly

Most access problems trace back to the same gap — no clear record of who has access, what role they hold, and what should happen when that changes. Delvia helps you keep that record so problems are visible before they become incidents.

Delvia is free on iPhone and Android. Keep a clear record of who has access to your accounts — and what to do when that changes — wherever you are.
