Recovering an Instagram Account for a Business You Bought

You bought the business, but the Instagram account still belongs to whoever set it up.

Is this your situation?

You now own the business, but you cannot log into its Instagram account. The account was set up and is still controlled by someone connected to the previous owner.

Do this first

Do not create a replacement Instagram account for the business. Ask the seller or former operator for login access or admin rights first. If that is not possible, a person with full control of the business portfolio can give you access to the account.

Which situation is yours?

  • Seller still has the password: request the login directly.
  • Account sits in a business portfolio you do not control: ask the controller for access.
  • No one has full control of the portfolio: submit a request to Meta.
  • Account is already in a different business portfolio: it must be removed before it is added to yours.
  • You cannot access the linked email: try the email provider's own recovery route.
  • You can still log in but lack control: check who holds the business portfolio.

How Instagram handles this

  • Each Instagram profile can only be part of one business portfolio at a time.
  • If the profile is in another business portfolio, it must be removed before it can join a new one.
  • A person can ask someone with full control of the business portfolio containing the profile to give them access.
  • If no one in the organization has full control, a person can submit a request to Meta.
  • A person can try switching the professional profile to private and back to professional to connect it to a Page they have admin access to.

Which recovery path is yours?

  1. Does the former owner or operator still hold the login or admin role? Request the login or admin rights from that person directly.
  2. Is the account inside a business portfolio you cannot access? Ask someone with full control of that business portfolio to give you access.
  3. Does no one in the organization have full control of the portfolio? Submit a request to Meta.
  4. Is the account already linked to a different business portfolio? It must be removed from its current business portfolio before it can be added to a new business portfolio.
  5. Can you still log in but not get administrative control? A person can try switching the professional profile to private and then back to connect it to a Page they have admin access to.

What not to do

  • Creating a replacement account You want to recover the original account rather than set up a new one.Why it happens: Starting over feels faster than waiting on a recovery request.
  • Assuming the portfolio can hold the account twice Each Instagram profile can only be part of one business portfolio. Why it happens: It must be removed from its current business portfolio before it can be added to a new one.
  • Skipping the full-control request A person with full control of the business portfolio can give you access to the account. Why it happens: A person can ask someone with full control of the business portfolio to give them access.

What to have ready

  • Seller contact details Confirm you can reach the previous owner. Check you have a working phone number or email.
  • Business portfolio name Find which portfolio holds the account. Check Meta Business Suite for the listing.
  • Who has full control Identify who can give you access. Check the portfolio's admin list.
  • Linked email access Confirm you can reach the linked email. Check the inbox for recovery messages.
  • Current portfolio membership Confirm the account is not in another portfolio. Check the account's portfolio status first.
  • Admin access to a Facebook Page Confirm you hold admin access to a connected Page. Check your role on the Page.

Stop this happening again

Document the account handover whenever a business changes hands. Plan account continuity before the next sale or transfer happens.

Keeping track of who has access

Situations like this are preventable when account control passes along with the business itself. Delvia keeps a record of who holds access so a sale does not leave the new owner locked out. A clear record of control turns a purchase into full access, not a recovery case.
