Viewer vs Viewer Limited for YouTube analytics

The one decision you make before sharing analytics access — and why getting it wrong either leaks revenue data or leaves someone locked out of the numbers they need.

YouTube gives you two read-only roles for people who only need to see data: Viewer and Viewer Limited. The difference is narrow but matters — Viewer includes revenue figures; Viewer Limited shows analytics without any financial numbers. Most creators don't realise there's a choice until they've already given a contractor more than they intended.

What each role actually sees

Both Viewer and Viewer Limited are read-only — neither can upload, edit, or remove content, and neither can change who has access to the channel. The only meaningful difference is revenue visibility.

Viewer sees everything a Manager or Editor sees in analytics, including estimated revenue, RPM, and CPM — the financial layer. Viewer Limited sees the same traffic, engagement, and audience data, but revenue columns are hidden entirely.

Both roles work through Studio Permissions on a Brand Account channel. Personal-account channels don't expose multi-user Permissions at all — if your channel is on a personal Google Account, neither role is available.

Revenue data — estimated earnings, RPM, CPM — is only visible to Viewer and above. Viewer Limited is the right default for anyone who doesn't need to see financials.

Which role should you give?

  1. Q1

Does this person need to see estimated revenue, RPM, or CPM?

Yes — they're a business partner, co-owner, or accountant who needs financial context
Give them Viewer. They'll see the full analytics picture including revenue.
No — they're an editor, strategist, or social media manager who only needs performance data
Give them Viewer Limited. They get all the traffic and engagement data without the financial layer.
  2. Q2

Are you sharing analytics with someone outside your team — like a brand partner or agency you're evaluating?

    Yes
Default to Viewer Limited. Revenue data is sensitive; you can always upgrade later if needed.
No — it's a trusted internal team member
Either role is fine. Consider whether they actually need revenue figures day-to-day.

Common questions

Yes. Viewer Limited has full access to standard analytics — views, watch time, subscriber changes, traffic sources, audience demographics. The only thing hidden is estimated revenue and related financial metrics.

Good to know

Analytics access is still channel access — track it like any other role

Read-only roles feel low-stakes, so they're often forgotten. A Viewer from a brand partnership three years ago still has a clear view of your channel's trajectory. The same cleanup habits that apply to editors and managers apply here too.
