How to change or turn off two-factor authentication on Instagram

Switching phones or methods? Here is how to change your Instagram two-factor settings or turn it off — and why keeping it on is worth it.

When you get a new phone or want to move from SMS to an authenticator app, update two-factor before you wipe the old device — otherwise you risk locking yourself out. Turning two-factor off entirely is possible but rarely a good idea; if you must, plan to turn it back on quickly with a fresh method.

Before you start

  • You can currently log in

Make changes while you still have access; do it before retiring an old phone.

  • The new method ready

Install the authenticator or have the new number on hand before switching.

Change or remove two-factor

  1. Open two-factor settings

Accounts Center → Password and security → Two-factor authentication, then select the account.

Where: Instagram app → Settings → Accounts Center → Password and security

  2. Add the new method first

Set up the new authenticator or number before removing the old one, so you are never without a second factor.

  3. Remove the old method or turn it off

Once the new method works, remove the old one. To turn two-factor off entirely, toggle it off (not recommended).

  4. Re-save backup codes

Generating new settings can invalidate old codes — save a fresh set.

What goes wrong

  • Wiping the old phone before updating two-factor

If the authenticator lived only on the old device, you can lock yourself out. Move the method first.

Already happened: Locked out by two-factor

  • Turning it off and forgetting to re-enable

An account with no second factor is far easier to take over. Re-enable promptly.

Frequently asked questions

Use a backup code or a trusted device to get in, then update two-factor immediately.

Access issues are easier to prevent when roles, owners, and responsibilities are recorded clearly

Most access problems trace back to the same gap — no clear record of who has access, what role they hold, and what should happen when that changes. Delvia helps you keep that record so problems are visible before they become incidents.

Delvia is free on iPhone and Android. Keep a clear record of who has access to your accounts — and what to do when that changes — wherever you are.
