Troubleshooting
User-Installed App Can't Be Removed as a Discord Member
A user-installed app can keep working in your server even when you try to remove it as a member.
Is this your situation?
You try to kick an app from your server the way you would a member, and it will not go. You installed this app to your own account rather than adding it to the server.
The short answer
Server apps are apps added to a server that all members can access, but only users with the Manage Server permission can remove them. It is not possible to fully disable apps that users in a server have installed to their account. Permissions can be edited so only the user who runs a command sees the results.
What you see, and why
| Symptom | Cause |
|---|---|
| The app still appears usable in your server after you tried to remove it. | Apps added directly to a user's account can be used in any server and DMs the user is in. |
| Kicking a bot from the Members list does not stop the app. | Removing an app from a server requires being the owner or having the Manage Server permission. |
| You cannot find a way to fully block the app for everyone. | It is not possible to fully disable apps that users have installed to their account. |
Check these first
- Check whether the app was added to the server or installed by a user. Apps are added to servers by admins or installed by users to their accounts.Verify: Look at who authorized the app in your server.
- Check your own permission level. Managing apps in a server requires owning the server or having Manage Server.Verify: Check your role for the Manage Server permission.
- Check whether to limit visibility instead of removal. Permissions can be edited so only the command user sees results.Verify: Check the role permissions for Use External Apps.
How Discord handles this
- Apps added directly to a user's account can be used in any server and DMs or group chats that the user is in.
- It is not possible to fully disable apps that users in a server have installed to their account.
- Permissions can be edited so only the user who uses a command sees the results.
- Apps that are added to a user's account may not have all the same capabilities as apps added to a server.
Which path applies to you?
- Was the app added to the server by an admin? To remove a server app, a user right-clicks the app's bot within the Members list and kicks the bot.
- Was the app installed by a user to their own account? It is not possible to fully disable apps that users in a server have installed to their account.
- Do you want to limit the app's visibility rather than remove it? Permissions can be edited so only the user who uses a command sees the results.
- Do you want to stop all members from using external apps? A user can edit permissions by going to Server Settings, Roles, the role, Permissions, Apps Permissions, and disabling Use External Apps.
Step by step: finding the cause
- Identify how the app entered your server. Apps on Discord can be added to servers by server admins or installed by users to their own accounts.Confirm: Check whether the app shows as a member added by an admin or by another user.
- Try removing it as a server app. To remove a server app, a user right-clicks the app's bot within the Members list and kicks the bot.Where: Members list → right-click app → KickConfirm: Check whether the app's name disappears from the Members list.
- Confirm you have the required permission. To remove an app from a server, a user must be the owner of the server or have the Manage Server permission enabled.Confirm: Check your role for the Manage Server permission.
- Recognize a user-installed app cannot be fully removed. It is not possible to fully disable apps that users in a server have installed to their account.Confirm: Check whether kicking the app had any effect for other members.
- Limit visibility of its results instead. Permissions can be edited so only the user who uses a command sees the results.Confirm: Check that the app's output is now only visible to the user who ran it.
- Restrict external apps for a role if needed. A user can edit permissions by going to Server Settings, Roles, selecting the role, Permissions, Apps Permissions, and disabling Use External Apps.Where: Server Settings → Roles → Permissions → Apps PermissionsConfirm: Check that Use External Apps is disabled for the role.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a kick to remove a user-installed app for everyone. Apps added directly to a user's account can be used in any server and DMs the user is in.Why it happens: An app added to a server appears as a member in that server.
- Assuming disabling the app entirely is possible. It is not possible to fully disable apps that users have installed to their account. Why it happens: The app can be used in any server and DMs the user is in.
- Trying to remove the app without the needed permission. Removing an app from a server requires being the owner or having the Manage Server permission. Why it happens: Check whether you hold the Manage Server permission in this server.
